Hostility because of Immigrants
Immigration was always a big issue in the world but became bigger over the last view years. Immigrants are coming to the United States of America and are producing waves of hate and discrimination against foreign people.
In this essay are three different articles shown who are talking about the issue and the movements that are going on in America, caused by the high number of immigrants. All three articles are written by different authors and published on different websites and from different newspaper but they all have in common that their main topic is about immigrants and how the people are treating them.
The issue about the immigrants appeared about one or two years ago, in the time people started to flee from violence and prosecution in their country. The cause of the violence is the war which is fought in countries like Syria and Iran. The conflict is between rebels and the government, but the group who is spreading the most fear in the world is ISIS. This group commits attacks all over the world for example the attack in Paris, one year ago where many people got shot on a concert and on the streets. Because of these terrorist attacks, many countries are scared to take care of immigrant from this region, because they do not want more attacks and deaths where they are living. The articles are therefore talking about the immigrants and the fears of the people to let them into their country and the with it going hate and antipathy. This hate is not only caused by the terrorist attacks, it is also caused by the fact that they are consuming goods and resources which are designated for the native citizen in the different countries.
The first article is called “As Migrants Face Abuse, Fear That ‘Brexit’ Has Given License to Xenophobia”(text 1) and deals with the xenophobia in Great Britain, but the other two articles, called “Obama courageously bucks America’s history of xenophobia”(text 2) and “Texas Has No Business Challenging Syrian Refugee Settlement, Judge Rules”(text 3) are dealing with the treatment of immigrants in the United states. In the United States the antipathy is shown open in the publicity and is strongly represented. Both texts who are dealing with the United States are talking about the demonstrations and opponents of immigration, but there has not been a physical attack on an immigrant. The first article is dealing with Great Britain and tells their readers about many attacks on immigrants and other foreign people, even if they have been living there for many years.
The first and the second textes are responding to the history of xenophobia in Great Britain (text 1) and the United States (text 2). Especially the second shows statistics and data of the increasing of people who are against immigrants, while the third article does not talk about the history of xenophobia.
The last two articles are depicting single politicians which are directly connected in the debate about the immigration and how to deal with it. Both articles about the United States are showing politicians which are all republicans and which are generally against immigrants.
In the end you can say that all articles are basically dealing with the same topic and are showing the same opinions about immigrants.
(1) As Migrant Face Abuse, Fear That ‘Brexit’ Has Given License to Xenophobia
The article “As Migrant Face Abuse, Fear…” is written by Dan Bilefsky on June the 27th, 2016 for the New York Times.
It is about the discrimination and the abuse and treatment of immigrants in the United Kingdom. The article is also responsive to the recently made voting in the United Kingdom about the exit of the the country out of the European Union, also called “Brexit”.
The article shows that in the last view month the voice against immigration became louder and louder in the UK. Meanwhile the abuse against foreign people living there became worse and there have been much more attacks. The “Leave” Campaign stoked fear all over the country of an immigrant influx by linking illegal immigrants from Syria, Iraq etc. with terrorism. But according to the article, the citizen of the UK started to link every immigrant with terrorism and started to abuse and discriminate every foreign person. The article talks, for example, about the attack of a polish woman which was living in the UK for many years.
The people and some politicians combined the high immigration rate with the lack of control of the borders, caused by the requirements and rules of the European union.
On this ground they had a voting to decide if they leave the EU. the voting was very close but at the end they decided to leave the European Union.
(2) Obama courageously bucks America’s history of xenophobia - the Washington Post
The article on the Washington Post Website is about the nativism in the United States and it compares the current refusal of immigrants, especially immigrants which flew from the war in Syria and other countries in this region. That is because of the fear of terrorists mingling among the immigrants.
The author compares the influx of immigrants in this time with the immigrants years ago, underneath those are the Jewish refugees from the Holocaust and refugees from Hungary (1958), Indochina (1979), and Cuba (1980).
"Pew Research" provided data about the increasing hostility of American people against immigrants. From 1958 to 1980 the hostility increased from 55 % to 70%. And now in our time time the hostility in the United States is higher than ever before, caused by the terrorist attacks like the assassination on 9/11. But in each case of immigration over the years, the immigrants overcame the antagonism of the American people. The fear and hostility was mostly swept under the “historical rug” because the citizens are ashamed of their former hate, and it is disgraceful for them.
The main opponents are the congressional Republican Jeff Session and the Rep. Bob Goodlatte. These two are according to the text very influential in the voice of the people, by speaking out negative about the immigrant influx.
(3) Texas Has No Business Challenging Syrian Refugee Settlement, Judge Rules
The article was published online at the “Hufferpost” on the 26th of June 2016 and deals with the immigrants coming to America, especially those who come from Syria.
The main topic is the resettlement of immigrants in Texas and their claims about not to resettle them there. The Texan government requested to block eight refugees from Syria, including six under the age of 16, but the responsible judge denied these requests.
The article also writes about Donald Trump and his antipathy against immigrants. He said, according to the text, that the government has no idea who is arriving from Syria and called the waves of immigrants a "Trojan Horse" in which terrorists can come into the country. This statement spread fear and hate against all immigrants, even against some who are just fleeing from violence and prosecution.
Finally you can say that all three articles are dealing with the same topic and are also based on the same nature of the problem, even if one of them (text 1) is talking about Great Britain and not about the United States of America, like the other two articles. They are all talking about the hostility the people have about immigrants based on the fear of terrorist attacks and the economical setbacks they bring with them.
